about the FOUNDER, joe holmesIf our youth knew that someone who looks just like them was able to make it out of a tough environment and find success, it may inspire them to do the same. My support system really made a difference in my life, and that’s the type of environment I am planning to create for our youth today through The General’s Future Charity Inc. My vision for this organization is to make a life changing impact on today’s youth and build future leaders from the ground up.” - Joe Holmes |
Joe ”The General” Holmes is the outlier. Growing up in the underprivileged streets of Seat Pleasant, Maryland, he frequently witnessed drugs being sold and abused, prostitution, and other forms of mental and physical violence. Many of his neighborhood childhood friends, who he had looked up to, began selling drugs to buy the newest clothes and flashy cars. It was at the pivotal age of 12, with trouble all around him, that Joe knew he had to make a choice; a life in the streets with his friends or be different and chose a life of purpose. Needless to say, he made the choice to be different and stand up for his principles and beliefs.
It was at this point in his life when Joe decided to set some ambitious personal goals and develop a plan using his athletic gifts to make it out of his neighborhood and make a better life. Joe worked hard throughout high school. Although he faced adversity along the way he earned a full athletic scholarship to attend Tyler Junior College in Tyler, Texas. During his time in Texas, Joe was nicknamed “The General” by his coach, because Joe was a leader both on and off the basketball court. Joe continued to excel as a student athlete while attending Tyler Junior College and earned a full athletic scholarship to attend the University of Nebraska as the starting point guard on the basketball team. After one full year in Nebraska, battling injuries along the way, Joe decided to transfer to Pfeiffer University and finish out his college career. During college Joe developed a strong passion for community outreach and development. He began connecting with youth through various basketball clinics and Big Brother programs. Despite the many difficulties and hurdles along the way, Joe continued to better himself on the court and in the classroom, graduating with a B.A. Degree in Sociology from Pfeiffer University, North Carolina.
Joe set goals and had dreams at an early age and he didn’t quit until he reached them. He was also fortunate to have a strong support system of family members, mentors, peers, and athletic coaches to help him along the way.
